[Review] Shadows of the Damned June 23, 2011

It’s impossible to look at Shadows of the Damned and ignore its pedigree, and when you have a game made by a dream-team of Japanese developers like Suda51 (No More Heroes, Killer7), Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Vanquish), and music by Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), why would you?

You play as a demon hunter, Garcia Hotspur. When Fleming, the lord of the dead, becomes fed up with you killing his minions, he personally whisks your girlfriend Paula away to Hell. Accompanied by a shapeshifting magical skull named Johnson, you head into the underworld to save your damsel and put a bullet between each of Fleming’s six eyes.

More after the jump.

If I remember correctly, and my memories aren’t candy-coated with nostalgia, back in the 90’s, tie-in games were either very terrible platformers or pretty good arcade beat-em-ups. I remember going to the local bowling alley and pumping quarter after quarter into The Simpsons or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games whenever I could. Now about 15 years later we have another game to add to the list of good 90’s arcade brawlers, Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game.

The fine folks at Atlus started uploading fan submissions for their Hall of Heroes character hub! Right now there are about 35 characters up for download. Now for licensing purposes I believe these are going to be original creations, not ones based off of existing games/anime/cartoons/whathaveyou. Either way there are some pretty neat designs that I approve of, Check them out!

For those that really really want licensed characters, it looks like GameFaqs users are starting to upload their own stuff. As of right now they have an Iron Man and a Kakashi of Naruto fame. However with no preview its kind of a gamble – but hey, the more the better!

Do you own a Playstation 3? When you think of videogames and Halo and Call of Duty are NOT the first games that come to your mind? Do you have any semblance of a soul?

Buy This Game.

We’re going to have a review up for this game in due time, but I can say that this game, especially at $39.99 is a great purchase for your Playstation 3. It’s essentially a retro throwback to old action/adventure games on the NES with a 3D twist. Think the original Legend of Zelda… if it was 3D. The game is charming as it is challenging and so far it’s a worthwhile experience that makes me happy that I invested in a Playstation 3.

One great aspect of the game is the character editor. You can basically design and change your in game character at will, using the game’s own 3D sprite editor. You want to create a 3D Link, Mario, Samus, Bomber-Man, Bowser, Mega Man, Moblin or your very own creation – Go nuts!

For those of you that are lazy and want to download someone else’s character (me) or you want to share your character with the world – Atlus set up a hub page… a “Hall of Heroes” if you will – that allows users to download and share their own creations. Not much on their now but I bet in 2 weeks this site will be packed, get those USB drives ready! Atlust is also holding a contest where the winners get Amazon credit. I know our very own Baconsamurai will be uploading his creations very soon!

Ah, Little Big Planet. When Sony first showed this off, I was floored by the concept. An epic, high-def 2D platform game that grants the player the complete ability to build and design their own characters and levels and share them globally via PSN. However when it came out, it had a “floaty” jumping mechanic. This proved annoying for someone that grew up on Mario and Sonic games. Outside of that, Media Molecule delivered a very well made and charming PS3 exclusive.

Little Big Planet 2 is also one of the worst secrets in the game industry this year, despite Sony’s attempts to cover it up. Well, the cat’s out of the bag because Game Informer, that magazine that realized it was terrible and has recently been attempting to fix itself – has a feature on Little Big Planet 2 and details have been leaked! Let’s check it out!
